Aims & Objectives

The Ishara Foundation’s main mission is to contribute to the improvements in the education of Deaf students in India at all levels, including the tertiary level. The Ishara Foundation is run mainly by Deaf people, therefore it is able to provide programs for Deaf people, led by Deaf people in an environment where we understand the importance of self-respect, culture and sign language of the Indian Deaf community.

The programs and projects run by Ishara Foundation aim to address these problems through an integrated approach, which includes the following elements:
- A bilingual approach to deaf education, where Indian Sign Language is the medium of
communication in the classroom through which literacy and subject matter is taught.
- Development of teaching materials based on the use of Indian Sign Language as the
medium of instruction.
- Training for Deaf sign language users to become resource people, teaching assistants
and ultimately fully qualified teachers within the Deaf education system.

The ultimate goal of the Ishara Foundation is to establish a College for the Deaf in India where tertiary education is fully accessible to Deaf students through accessible communication.
